On March 12, 2026, in Maputo, the Mozambican Chamber of Mines successfully launched the Women in Mining Committee. This platform aims to foster debate and serve as a point of convergence between the government, the private sector, civil society and academia in order to find practical solutions for the empowerment of women in Mozambique’s mining and extraction sector.

Led by Dr. Sofia Mussa, CMM Board Member, the committee will focus on:
Professional women in mining, women in the community, women in business and women in artisanal mining.
” With this initiative, we have established a structured platform for: 1. Give real visibility to the contributions of women in the sector; 2. Identify practical solutions to obstacles to licensing and cooperativism; 3.Define priority actions and joint commitments that will guide our work throughout 2026.” Said the PCA, Edson Matches
Organized by the Mozambican Chamber of Mines (CMM) in cooperation with IHK Chemnitz, a project funded by Sequa, the event was attended by the Secretary of State for Mines, Jorge Daudo, Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, Inge Tessenderdorf, the former Minister of Resources and former Speaker of the Mozambican Parliament, Esperanca Bias, representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Mineral Resources, the Association of Women in Mining, Zenzi Awases, private sector stakeholders and other partners.
